Call to Action on Childhood Obesity
According to current research, about 1 in every 3 American children are overweight or obese. Canada's data shows similar findings. In fact, childhood obesity has become a worldwide problem within recent years. Diseases known to affect older adults, such as cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and type II diabetes, are now affecting our youth. These issues are more than likely to cause additional problems in their adult life. Social isolation and depression are also becoming more common among overweight youth. Numerous influences come into play as the cause for this issue such as individual, family, community, and social factors. But it can be stopped. (Journal of Family Practice Kathleen Barnhouse, Adam J. Zolotor and Debra Stulberg. 59.7 (July 2010): p386(3))
So what can you do to help your child be in the best health possible? Successful interventions have taken place at all levels of influence and have used primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention methods. At the primary level, it is your responsibility that your child is receiving the nutrition and physical exercise needed to stay healthy. Instead of prescribing a strict diet, encourage healthy eating habits by explaining to your child why certain foods are good for the body. While some sugary snacks are essential to a child's growth, try to keep mostly healthy snacks in the house such as fruit and yogurt. This will help your child to make healthier choices when they're not at home. One way to encourage exercise is to enroll your child in a community sports program. A weekly family game of soccer or basketball will also get your child off the couch and outside. Care at the secondary level involves talking with your pediatricion about how to best plan a lifestyle change for your child. Many doctors may not bring this up in a regular visit, so it is important that you start the conversation, even if your doctor doesn't. He/She will also help you make sure you are on the right path with any obesity prevention methods you may have already started. Some tertiary measures may involve counseling or medication for your child. Research has shown that overweight children who receive emotional support in their weight loss are more successful than those without it. While research on bariatric surgery for adolescents is still being conducted, weight loss medication for older adolescents has proven to be successful. Weight Loss Tip #9 Take some fresh air. Instead of spending your work breaks catching up on the latest gossip (which won’t do you any good in terms of health), use them to take a walk outside your workplace. If your breaks are too short to get out, even walking up and down the stairs would do you some good. A 10-minute walk here, another there, and a final one going home is enough to give you the minimum recommendation of 30 minutes of activity in a day. In addition to the fresh air, it allows for better blood flow and circulation.
