Starve a Cold, Feed a Fever....   Or the Other way Around?

It's that time of year again when new strains of the flu start to go around and it seems like everyone around you has a cold. Sure, you could wash your hands every 5 minutes and take Vitamin C every day, but is that really all you can do? What about when you do finally get sick? Research shows that eating right and exercising, even with a cold, can help your immune system recover faster.

The answer to that age old question, is that starving yourself is never a good thing. Regularly eating a well-balanced diet will give your body the nutrients it needs to fight off colds. Ingredients such as Antioxidants destroy the free radical cells of common disease molecules and reduce your chance of getting sick, as well as help you get better quicker. Especially if you've caught a bug, it is important to keep your body fueled with fruits, vegetables, and vitamins.

For those of you who have a hard time regularly eating fruits and vegetables a good substitute is nutriMetrix OPC-3. This supplement helps to build up your immune system, promotes cardiovascular health and supports a healthy complexion. With the flu season coming up it is important to strengthen your body to fight common colds that could bring you down.

It is fairly common knowledge that regular exercise can boost your immune system to effectively prevent colds. It can also help your immune system while it's fighting a cold. Because of this, it is usually safe to partake in mild exercise with a cold, but you should always listen to your doctor and your body. If you are taking decongestants, have a fever, or have asthma, exercising while the body is ill may make you feel worse. The ideal advice, is to give your body the best defense and exercise regularly. If you know you've got a cold coming, some mild exercise to boost your immune system wouldn't hurt.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH: Whole Butter Wheat Pancakes

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk, plus more if necessary*
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon artificial sweetener
  • 1/2 cup blueberries

Directions

  1. Sift together flour and baking powder, set aside. Beat together the egg, milk, salt and artificial sweetener in a bowl. Stir in flour until just moistened, add blueberries, and stir to incorporate.
  2. Preheat a heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat, and spray with cooking spray. Pour approximately 1/4 cup of the batter into the pan for each pancake. Cook until bubbly, about 1 1/2 minutes. Turn, and continue cooking until golden brown.

*You may need to use more milk than 1 cup. The batter should be thin enough so that it pours, but not so thin that it's runny. We find that 1/4 cup additional milk is about the maximum needed

Weight Loss Tip #14: Don't be overly restrictive

Everyone has their favorite snacks and cutting down on them may be a good idea for overall health. But be wary of cutting them out all together. Cutting them out completely has shown to usually lead to relapse. Treating yourself to a treat every now and then can be motivating and may be a useful tool to a successful weight loss program.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH:

Success does not consist in never making blunders, but in never making the same one the second time.
